March 11, 2019 -- Silo Mural
This mural (#8 in The Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour) is located in a small park in the heart of Antonito, Colorado. The art stands on four 40-foot high silos and features depictions of natives, settlers, pioneers, farmers, railroads and the magnificent San Luis landscape. All are important aspects to the rich history of the region.
This mural was created by Fred “Lightning Heart” Haberlein and is one of many on the “Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour”. To see these murals, you will have to drive nearly100 miles through very rural areas, including a few dirt roads but the trip is worth it.
Fred F. Haberlein (1944-2018), was an American muralist, painter, and sculptor. He was one of the most prolific mural painters in the country. He grew up at Conejos Ranch, a guest ranch in Conejos County, Colorado. He studied sculpture and printmaking in college, but he is best known for his murals throughout the western United States, predominantly in Colorado. He lived near Glenwood Springs, Colorado and was twice nominated for the Colorado Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.”
