.
The Jacob Wolf House near Norfork, Arkansas is the oldest public structure in Arkansas. It is a log structure, built in 1825 by Jacob Wolf, the first documented white settler of the area. It was constructed as the first permanent courthouse for Izard County in Arkansas Territory . Architecturally it's a "saddle bag", which is a two-story dog trot with the second floor built over the open breezeway.
The two-story log house was built to serve as the courthouse. The large upper-level room that extends over the breezeway served as the courtroom where judges and lawyers traveled from distant parts of the territory to appear at the regularly scheduled county and territorial court sessions. The lower level was Wolf's residence on one side with the other side housing the county clerk’s office where John P. Houston (brother of Texas legend Sam Houston), served as a county clerk.

2 weeks agoVery interesting history in this oldest house in Arkansas. Doesn't look much like a courthouse these days, but was probably pretty impressive at the time, and had multi-purpose usage.

2 weeks agoNice shot of this historic log structure. I've visited several Arkansas cities, but I have never heard of Norfolk, Arkansas. I'll have to Google it!
