.
Crazy Horse is the world's largest mountain carving located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is considered The Eighth Wonder of the World in progress. These photos were taken during our 2017 visit to the Black Hills area of South Dakota.
"The memorial is to honor Native American warrior, Crazy Horse (1840-1877) who was a Lakota war leader of the Oglala band in the 19th century. He took up arms against the United States federal government to fight against encroachment by white American settlers on Native American territory and to preserve the traditional way of life of the Lakota people." When construction began in 1948, the original designer/sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski (1909-1982), thought it would take 30 years to complete and now 74 years later, it’s a far from finished work in progress. At present, the only part of the memorial considered complete is the 87-foot-tall head of Crazy Horse. The site is open for tourist visits.
When completed, the overall memorial will be 563 ft (172M) in height and 641 ft (196M) long and show a Native American warrior with long hair sitting on horseback.. The Horse’s head will be 219 ft (67M) high, its ears 45 ft (14M) long and eyes 16 feet (5M) wide.

on January 22, 2022It's always a bonus and good fortune to see works of art and history in progress! Crazy Horse is quite famous and I await, with great anticipation, the completion of the work in progress. I hope you will be able to revisit once it's complete, take photos, and share them with us fellow SmugMuggers!

on January 21, 2022Nice job Frank to show the comparison. It looks like there is a lot of work to be done and many more years before this is completed. It will be quite something to see when completed.

on January 21, 2022Interesting--I wonder how far it has progressed since your visit in 2017? Will be quite something to see when it is done, but also anytime along the way.

on January 21, 2022This is fabulous to see the vision and the actual image now side-by-side. I truly hope it gets finished soon as it will be magnificent. The face of Crazy Horse on the mountain is excellent. Great photo journalism Frank, and superb captures of both.

on January 21, 2022Even with the profile of Crazy Horse in the cliff it is impressive. The work, if every completed will be monumental!

on January 21, 2022Great shot! They still have a long way to go. We were there a few years before you and it does not look like they have made much additional progress.
