December 3, 2022 -- Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light

.
The Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light, on Lake Erie, located near the end of the west breakwater at the mouth of the Grand River was built in 1925. The light is automated and closed to the public. However, it is possible to walk out along the breakwater to view the structure and grounds.

In 2009, the United States General Services Administration put the lighthouse up for public auction via an online auction and a bidder secured the lighthouse in 2011 for $71,010 and began converting it into a summer residence in 2012.

Uninhabited since 1948, it has undergone a top to bottom makeover. The original windows on the first floor have been stripped, refinished, and the glass replaced. The plaster walls have been repaired and painted throughout. The hardwood floors on the second floor were stripped, repaired and refinished in a dark chocolate color. The entire structure was rewired to code and electricity is provided by a generator. A fully equipped modern kitchen was installed with new cabinets, new appliances, an island and granite countertops. In addition to continuing to serve as an active aid-to-navigation maintained by the US Coast Guard, it is now lighthouse will be used as a vacation retreat and summer get-a-way home.

Nicely captured Frank in what looks like before or after stormy weather. Can't image what the cost must have been to restore and to keep it up in the harsh weather.

Wow, how cool that this beauty has been completely restored, and is now a private summer home. I'd love to see the inside. Beautiful shot Frank!
