May 19, 2022 -- My Other Nevada Home
.
This is a telelphoto shot of a remote radar installation near Tonopah, Nevada operated by the U.S. Air Force during 1956-1970. It was part of our nations "Early Warning Defense System" in the North American Air Defense Command during the Cold War. During my time in the USAF, I was assigned here with the 866th Radar Sqdn for 24 months on top of this mountain. Again, a scan of a 35mm slide I took during a 1993 trip to the area ... it's now operated by FAA.

on May 19, 2022How cool! I'm so glad it's still there and you got to visit the location again. My x Mother-in-law lived in Tonopah for a few years back in the 1970s.

on May 19, 2022Life on the mountaintop looks pretty remote--was there housing there, or did you go off the mountain to live?

on May 19, 2022So interesting to see the old radar station; in the Canadian north we also had American early warning stations.

on May 19, 2022That must have been a lonely assignment! As an ex-air force pilot, my husband often pointed out radar installations used by pilots when we traveled around the country. Terrific shot!

on May 19, 2022Nice shot of the Early Warning centre. Reminds me of the USAF/RAF base at Fylingdales in Yorkshire. Although they had one massive dome and three smaller ones. Later replaced by a pyramid structure which I believe is still there.
