April 3, 2016 - Chicken Creek Saloon
The Chicken Creek Saloon is a must when travellng through Chicken, Alaska. Inside you will find an old time saloon atmosphere. The local gold miners and area residents frequent this establishment regularly and, in spite of often being labeled as “the most unfriendly place in Alaska”, we found them to be very friendly and welcoming of travelers passing through.
Chicken is a community founded on gold mining and is one of the few surviving gold rush towns in Alaska. The population was 7 at the 2010 Census. However, usually year round, there are 17 inhabitants.
When this area was settled by miners around 1900, it was abundant with Ptarmigan which is now the Alaska State Bird. Ptarmigans closely resemble a chicken, so when the town was incorporated in 1902 the name Ptarmigan was suggested. The locals decided this was too difficult to pronounce (and spell), so they settled on Chicken.
